Balloon adventure was a bust in 1843 (The Staunton News Leader)

Staunton had a love affair with flight long before it became a practical and commercial success. In the 1830s, for example, residents frequently amused themselves by constructing small paper balloons, inflating them with hot air and sending them up at night adorned with candles for illumination.
